GU272 is dedicated to preserving the memorycommemorating the lives and restoring the honor of the 272 enslaved people sold by the Jesuits of the Maryland Province of the Society of Jesus in 1838, and others before and after them who were sold as well. As Descendants, we commit to reconciling the enslavement of our ancestorsreconnecting families and renewing ties lost.

About Us

The GU272 Descendants Association is a 501(c)(7) non-profit organization.  We exist to support the goals, objectives and aspirations of all descendants of the 272 enslaved people who were sold by Jesuits of Georgetown University in 1838, and further to represent the same interests of all other descendants of people enslaved before and after 1838 by the Jesuits of the Maryland Province of the Society of Jesus.


Our Mission

The Association’s mission is to support the goals, objectives and aspirations of all Descendants of the GU272, and further to represent the same interest of all other descendants of people enslaved before and after 1838 by the Jesuits of the Maryland Province of the Society of Jesus. The Association shall be, without limitation, an instrument and voice to pursue and address the mutual interest of all descendants through membership recruitment, financial support, public relations, community outreach, talent development, loyalty building, and demonstrated dedication and commitment to the legacy of the GU272 - Maryland Diaspora.

Our Objectives

The objectives of the Association shall be, without limitation, the following:

  • To unite current and future descendants of the GU272; descendants of all people enslaved by the Jesuits; and friends, allies, supporters, and family members of these descendants.

  • To foster a spirit of FAMILY, kinship, unity and mutual support among all descendants of enslaved people, and particularly among descendants of the GU272.

  • To promote and support the aspirations of descendants through programming and fundraising activities that help achieve Association objectives.

  • To promote the educational and economic aspirations of all descendants through mutually beneficial relationships with the GU272 Foundation, Georgetown University, the Society of Jesus, and other organizations recognizing the descendants of the GU272.

  • To engage in planning and sponsoring social and economic activities that will strengthen the Association for generations into the future.

continue to seek justice on behalf of our GU272 ancestors and all who have been shackled mind, body and spirit through enslavement; to collaborate with and support members of our GU272 Descendants Association; to represent our Association and to convey our story on behalf of conveying the truth about our history.

What I Want My GU272 Ancestors to know...
how hard we will work to continue their legacy of hope, faith, love, tenacity, perseverance, and belief in God. As I stand on the shoulders of those who sacrificed for the greater good, I am compelled to do no less than they prepared me to do.

What I Want My GU272 Ancestors to know...

that for most of my life I sensed a spirit within that no one could ever explain. Not one of perfection, BUT one of Integrity and Truth with an unexplained conviction that could never be compromised. Now, I get where that came from; it was my enslaved Ancestors whom spirit overtook my being unbeknownst to even me.
